Choplife Soundsystem, an Afrodance music collaboration between Mr. Eazi and DJ Edu, has just published their first album, “Choplife Vol. 1 – Mzansi Chronicles,” through Choplife Limited/emPawa Africa.
Choplife Soundsystem travels between Capetown and Johannesburg, South Africa, for this inaugural installment of the Choplife music series (the tracks were recorded there in 2022 and 2023) in order to connect with some of the area’s most interesting artists.
The album Choplife Vol. 1: Mzansi Chronicles also serves as an official debut to the Choplife Soundsystem, whose moniker is a West African pidgin expression for “enjoy life.”
Ami Faku, one of South Africa’s most streamed singers, provides the seductive vocals on “Wena,” the album’s lead song.
The 14-track mixtape features appearances from a number of featured artists, including Focalistic & Anaati on By Force, Ami Faku, Moonchild Sanelly, Major League DJs, Mellow and Sleazy, Nkosazana Daughter, 2woshort and Stompiiey, Mo-T, and Aymos on Ziwa La. South Africa is currently home to one of the most exciting club scenes in the world.
She tells a tale of would-be lovers who were never able to fully commit to one another while duetting with Mr. Eazi in her native Xhosa. This sorrow can only be resolved in the glimmer of the dance floor.
The addition of Nkosazana Daughter’s deep, dulcet tones lends “Die For You” and “Indaba,” two of South Africa’s most intriguing and original new songs, an almost otherworldly quality.
Rappers 2woshort and Stompiiey add their unending swag to the songs “Big Boy” and “No Condom.” Big-room anthems and personal manifestos, “Tear Chain” and the Focalistic-assisted “By Force” find Mr. Eazi adamantly outlining his goals for 2023 and beyond.
