At the age of 37, Ghanaian forward Asamoah Gyan has formally announced his retirement from professional football.

The former Sunderland and Stade Rennes forward retires as Ghana’s second-most-capped player and all-time leading scorer with 51 goals.

Gyan last appeared for the national team at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which has been almost four years since his last game.

Additionally, the 37-year-old was left off of Ghana’s World Cup roster last year, which led to the Black Stars’ early elimination from the competition.

He last played for Ghana Premier League team Legon Cities two years ago, although he hasn’t played for another club since leaving them.
