As per a report from Asaase Radio, the former First Lady passed away earlier today, which is Sunday, October 1, 2023.
During her husband’s tenure as the head of state in Ghana, Theresa Kufuor held the position of Ghana’s First Lady from 2001 to 2009.
The report stated that her husband, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, was present at their home when his wife of more than 55 years passed away. It also mentioned that Mrs. Kufuor had been in poor health in recent years.
Coincidentally, President Nana Akufo-Addo had traveled to the mountains to visit the former President, and her passing is reported to have occurred shortly before the President’s arrival.
John and Theresa Kufuor have been blessed with five children: J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor. Additionally, they have eight grandchildren.
Their love story began when they first met at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961. After dating for a period, they eventually tied the knot in 1962.
Before assuming the role of First Lady, Theresa, whose maiden name was Mensah before she adopted her husband’s surname, worked as a nurse and midwife. Her contributions include advocating for policy changes in the Government’s white paper on Educational Reforms, which aimed to implement the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program.
Theresa received her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, located in Keta, Volta Region. Subsequently, she moved to London, where she became a Registered General Nurse within the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland. She furthered her education at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London, obtaining a State Certified Midwife Certificate in Premature Nursing.
