Between June 2019 and July 2020, the mortuary employee Stephen Kwabena Bartels embezzled the money.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) claimed that despite the accused health officer’s assurance of a payment plan to pay off the debt and his transfer to a different facility within the area, he has yet to make any payments since the year 2020.
The money represents revenue for the 554 corpses that were placed in the morgue of the Regional Hospital during that time.
In the meantime, the committee has requested that the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital repay GH36,000 that was paid to some personnel in 2020 as undeserved salaries.
According to Ebenezer Prince Arhin, the hospital’s deputy director of human resources, attempts to collect the money from the surviving family members of some of the deceased employees during the past two years have failed.
